At least eight people have died from cholera in Haiti, according to government officials on Sunday, raising fears of the devastating epidemic that wiped out nearly 10,000 people there a decade ago.
The cholera deaths are the first to be reported in the country for three years, and came from an area of the capital Port-au-Prince and an unsanitary seaside slum controlled by gangs.
Widespread protests have devastated the supply chain for essentials such as clean drinking water and fuel, after health officials urged protestors to “have a conscience” and stop blocking access to the country’s fuel terminals.
