All are said to have gone trekking from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi.
All of them were reported to be training for mountaineering. The news agency PTI reported this news quoting the principal of the institution. According to the latest information, 8 out of 29 people have been rescued and 10 people have been killed and search operations are on for the rest.
A group of 29 novice mountaineers got stuck in a snowstorm on the Danda-II peak of Draupadi in Uttarkashi while trekking. Shikrati is located in the Gangotri range of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Helicopters have already been deployed to rescue the rest.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tweeted about the accident. He said, "The NIM team along with the district administration, NDRF, SDRF, army and ITBP personnel are carrying out rapid relief and rescue operations to rescue the climbers". He also said, "Talking to the Defense Minister, it has been requested to take the help of the army to speed up the rescue operation".
