A train carrying ammonia derailed in northeastern Serbia, causing the cargo to leak out, and officials claimed Sunday that around 51 people had been poisoned as a result.
According to the statements made by Vladan Vasic, the mayor of the city of Pirot, which is where the catastrophe took place, the ammonia leak was responsible for "51 cases of poisoning."At a press conference, Vasic stated that "seven persons were transferred to (hospital) in Nis," which is the largest city in the area.The train derailed in the evening, resulting in "the release (of ammonia) and the dispersion of a substantial amount of gas into the atmosphere," according to a statement issued by the ministry of the interior.
