Swiggy reported on Thursday that in 2022, Indians ordered an average of 137 plates of biryani per minute, suggesting a continued surge in demand for the dish.
Swiggy's annual trends report stated that chicken biryani still dominated the vegetarian option. The rate of biryani orders increased from 115 per minute in 2020 to 137 per minute in 2022, or 2.28 per second. Ravioli (Italian) and Bibimbap (Korean) emerged as popular choices as Indians tried new cuisines, the report found.
The traditional masala dosa was another crowd-pleaser. Over 40 lakh Swiggy orders were placed for samosas, but pav bhaji and popcorn were also very popular in India. More than 20,000 kilograms of popcorn were ordered by customers, the vast majority of which came in after 10 o'clock at night.
Gulab jamun, a perennial favourite, was the most frequently ordered dessert at 27 lakh, followed by rasmalai at 16 lakh and chocolate lava cake at more than 10 lakh.
Over fifty thousand metric tonnes (tonnes) of organic fruits and vegetables were purchased by Instamart users. People in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune tended to have the healthiest diets. The company also discovered some interesting Instamart search trends, such as those for "petrol," "mommy," "sofa," "beds," "underwear," and "and more."
Over 29.86 million orders were placed for chicken, making it the most popular meat choice in India. It also noted that "Bangalore ranked first in the meat delivery category, followed by Hyderabad and Chennai."
