On Wednesday, President Gabriel Boric made the announcement that the rank of the official Chilean representation in Palestine will be raised under his administration's plans.
Boric also reaffirmed his solidarity with the Palestinian people during an event that took place at the Palestinian Club in Santiago City. He emphasised that "Christmas is a time to reflect on the sufferings, to which we cannot remain oblivious."
"We cannot ignore the fact that a community is enduring the effects of an unauthorised occupation. It is fighting back despite the fact that its rights and dignity are being violated. That is one hundred percent unfair."
At a press conference that she hosted on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Antonia Urrejola provided additional information regarding the announcement that President Boric made.
She explained that the Boric administration will increase the level of diplomatic representation in order to move towards the establishment of an embassy in Palestine, a country with which Chile has relations dating back to the year 1998.
Urrejola explained that the current charge d'affaires for Chile in Palestine "does have the rank of ambassador," and he added that his country also has diplomatic relations with Palestine "will open what will be known as an honorary consulate in Bethlehem.
The fact that this is one of the most important areas of origin for the Palestinian community that currently resides in Chile means that the representation will make it easier for the parties to maintain a reciprocal link.
