The Indian women's hockey team, captained by Savita Punia, emerged victorious in the first-ever FIH Nations Cup, which took place in Valencia, Spain. The final score was India 1, Spain 0. Gurjit Kaur of India scored the game-winning goal for her country. Valencia, Spain served as the host city for the first-ever FIH Nations Cup, which took place there from December 11-17, 2022. As replacement teams, India and Spain competed in the FIH women's Hockey Pro League 2021-22 season. This was necessary because Australia and New Zealand had withdrawn from the competition due to concerns regarding COVID-19.
As a consequence of this result, the team coached by Janneke Schopman has been elevated to the FIH Pro League for the 2023–24 season. The cash prize for Hockey India's tournament has been announced as Rs. 2 lakh for each player on the team and Rs. 1 lakh for each member of the support staff. India finished the competition undefeated, having won all five of their matches during the competition. After cruising through the group stage with victories over Chile (3-1), Japan (2-1), and South Africa (2-0), the Indian team had an exciting victory over Ireland (2-1) in the penalty shootout to advance to the semifinals.
