On the Fairwork India Ratings 2022, which assesses companies according to the working conditions of gig workers on the minimum requirements of fair work, Amazon Flex, Dunzo, Ola, Uber, and PharmEasy all received a score of 0 out of a possible 10. With a score of seven out of ten, Urban Company came out on top among all of the platforms evaluated.This comes at a time when ride-hailing businesses like Ola and Uber are dealing with regulatory hurdles, higher wait times, and requests from drivers to increase fees and lower app revenues. While businesses like Swiggy and Dunzo have had to deal with worker complaints about rate adjustments, incentive changes, and the length of time that workers are required to be signed in for, other businesses have not.
The report evaluated 12 Indian platforms, including Amazon Flex, Bigbasket, Dunzo, Flipkart, Ola, PharmEasy, Porter, Swiggy, Uber, Urban Company, Zepto, and Zomato, and gave each one a score based on how fairly they treat their workers in terms of compensation, working conditions, contracts, management, and representation.Gig workers are not considered to be employees of the company for which they perform work; as a result, they are not paid a salary and do not have access to the same benefits as salaried employees; rather, they are paid on a per-gig basis. For instance, this would be the case for a delivery executive working for Swiggy or for an Uber driver, in which case the platform would assign the assignments and receive a fee for each one.
The highest score was a seven out of ten earned by Urban Company, followed by a six earned by Bigbasket, a five earned by Flipkart and Swiggy, a four earned by Zomato, a two earned by Zepto, a one earned by Porter, and the remaining companies earning a score of zero.
