Uddhav Thackeray, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and a former chief minister of Maharashtra, has proposed placing the contested districts along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border under the control of the national government until a permanent solution can be found.
Using the term "regions" to refer to the areas ""It is not only a problem of language and border, but of humanity," Uddhav observed in reference to the situation in Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra. Since time immemorial, the villages on the border have been home to a steady population of people who speak Marathi. Their day-to-day activities, language, and way of life are all in Marathi."
A contentious dispute has arisen between the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka about the question of who has authority over specific border regions, particularly Belagavi.
