The soil subsidence that has been affecting Joshimath has caused wider fissures to form in other parts of the city as well, such as close to the Joshimath-Auli ropeway. When soil subsidence worsened more than a week ago, the 4.5-kilometer ropeway that connects Joshimath to the skiing area of Auli was shut down. In the Karanprayag neighborhood of the Chamoli district, residents who own homes in the Bahuguna Nagar neighborhood are concerned about their futures because of ground subsidence. Around fifty homes in the Bahuguna Nagar neighborhood have also developed cracks, and there have been several small landslides in the area. Rains pounded the sinking town in Uttarakhand on Saturday, which is when residents of the town, who were already in a state of terror, made the shocking discovery and hurriedly left their homes.
