Peru has been rocked by further unrest as demonstrators block roads and hold mass funerals for those killed in violent protests. On Wednesday, one person was reported dead and at least 10 injured in protests in Arequipa, Peru's second-largest city, against a proposed copper mine. New clashes that broke out Sunday between protesters and police in the southern city of Andahuaylas left two dead and at least five injured. At least four people have been reported killed in demonstrations throughout Peru opposing the government of President Dina Boluarte. Protesters have erected new blockades and expanded their demonstrations in several regions, as calls for new elections and the release of detained former President Pedro Castillo grow across the country.
In Peru, citizen groups and organizations have been holding a number of social protests since the 10th of December. They are demanding the resignation of Boluarte, who was appointed after the Congress dismissed her predecessor, Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), as well as the immediate call for early elections. The Ombudsman's Office reported that up until Wednesday afternoon, 50 civilians had been killed in clashes with security forces, traffic accidents, and blockades that were linked to the mobilizations. Additionally, it was reported that one police officer had died as a result of violence by demonstrators.
