A stampede that occurred during a rally held by Telugu Desam president and former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh resulted in the deaths of three women. This is the second incident in a span of four days that people have lost their lives at a public event of Mr. Naidu's Telugu Desam Party, which has been holding a series of political meetings across the state in preparation for the 2024 assembly elections in the state. Mr. Naidu is the current Chief Minister of the state of Telangana.
Mr. Naidu described the event as a terrible tragedy and promised to provide financial assistance in the amount of 5 lakh rupees to each of the families who had to bury a member of their family.
According to a senior officer in the Andhra Pradesh police department, the public meeting had already concluded, and Mr. Naidu had already left the location to return to his residence when the tragedy occurred.
Following the public meeting, there was a programme hosted by local leaders of the Telugu Desam Party to give sarees to the women in the community as gifts from Chandrababu Naidu in celebration of Sankranti, the harvest festival that will take place in approximately two weeks.
"To obtain the Chandrababu Sankranti Kanuka, there were approximately 4,000 women who had gathered. Barricades had been set up so that the order of the lines could be preserved.
