Despite the rise in COVID-19 cases, thousands of people in China are looking forward to 2023.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Wuhan, the city that was the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago, to celebrate the New Year despite the presence of a significant security presence. After a "tough" 2022 that was filled with lockdowns and, in December, a major new virus outbreak, many people let balloons go into the sky when the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve before taking selfies with their friends. They were hoping that 2023 would be "better."
