Javed Khan Amrohi, Actor of Iconic Film Lagaan, Passes Away
Javed Khan Amrohi, the actor who played a pivotal role in the iconic film Lagaan, passed away peacefully at his home on tuesday. He was 78 years old.
Born in India, Amrohi started his career in theatre and television during the 1970s and 1980s. He was a part of several plays, including ‘Balivas’, ‘Shama’, ‘Dharwad’ and ‘Ismat Chugtai’. His first major feature film was with Shyam Benegal’s 1981 classic ‘Bhumika’.
Amrohi is best remembered for his role as Raja Puran Singh in Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2001 Golden Globe-nominated blockbuster ‘Lagaan’. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed Indian films of all time. Amrohi was lauded for his portrayal of the strict disciplinarian Puran Singh and his performance remains one of the highlights of the film.
After Lagaan, Amrohi starred in several television series and films, including ‘Ganga Ki Kasam’, ‘Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai’, ‘Giraftaar’ and ‘Chup Chup Ke’. He also appeared in a short film titled ‘Elevator’ which won numerous awards at various film festivals.
Amrohi will be remembered for his stellar performances in both Indian cinema and theatre. He has left behind a rich legacy of artistry and will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.
