Buddhadeva Bose, a versatile Indian Bengali writer of the 20th century, is well-known for his poetry, novels, short stories, plays, and essays. He was an influential critic and editor of his time, and is considered one of the five poets who introduced modernity into Bengali poetry. Bose studied English language and literature at the University of Dhaka, where he earned his MA with distinction marks that remain unsurpassed as of 2007. He worked as an editor of the literary magazine Pragati and set up the Department of Comparative literature in Jadavpur University. He established Kavita, the flagship poetry magazine in Bengali, which he edited and published for 25 years. He wrote more than 40 novels, with his most admired work being Tithidore. Bose devoted his life to literature, writing for long hours every day. He wrote poetry under the influence of Western literature, but his early works show the influence of Tagore. Bose was a disciplined worker and showed great love and care for his children.
