Wednesday, Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, defied attempts to arrest him by remaining holed up in his Lahore residence, leading to repeated clashes between his supporters and the police.Khan was ousted from office last year through a no-confidence vote and has been embroiled in several legal cases as he campaigns for early elections and a return to power.
Throughout the night, police and paramilitary rangers engaged in fierce confrontations with supporters of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party near his Zaman Park residence. The police fired tear gas, while the angry crowds hurled rocks at them.
According to Syed Mubashir, a Lahore police spokesman, more than 35 police officers were injured since the operation began.Shortly before dawn, Khan released a video in which he sat in front of Pakistan and PTI flags, with spent tear gas canisters scattered on his desk. He expressed his belief that the police would return again.
