Left parties' delegation visits Manipur to assess violence situation

Joint delegation of CPI(M) and CPI in Manipur to express solidarity, study situation, talk to authorities

A joint delegation of five MPs from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) arrived in Manipur on July 6 to express solidarity with the suffering people of the state, study the situation on the ground, and talk to the authorities for restoring normalcy.

The delegation is led by Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas of the CPI(M) and includes Rajya Sabha MPs Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and Binoy Viswam of the CPI(M), and Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar and Lok Sabha MP K. Subba Rayan of the CPI.

The delegation met with representatives of various civil society organizations and political parties in Churachandpur district, which has been the worst affected by the recent violence. They also met with the district administration and the police.

In a statement, the delegation said that they were "deeply disturbed" by the violence in Manipur and that the "claims of the greatest governance through 'double engine' government are now exposed to the marrow of its bones."

The delegation called for an immediate end to the violence and for the government to take steps to address the grievances of the people. They also urged the government to ensure that the relief and rehabilitation measures reach the affected people without delay.

The delegation is scheduled to visit Imphal valley on July 7 and 8. They will meet with the governor of Manipur and other top officials. They will also meet with representatives of the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) and other student organizations.

The delegation is expected to submit a report to their respective parties after completing their visit.

Background

The violence in Manipur began on June 18, after a group of people from the Kuki community attacked a bus carrying people from the Meitei community. The attack killed one person and injured several others.

The violence has since spread to other parts of the state, with reports of arson, looting, and clashes between members of different communities.

The state government has imposed a curfew in some parts of the state and deployed the army to restore order. However, the violence has continued.

The violence has caused widespread displacement and loss of property. Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and take shelter in relief camps.

The violence has also had a negative impact on the economy of the state. Businesses have been closed and tourists have stopped visiting the state.

The government has been criticized for its handling of the situation. Critics have accused the government of failing to take preventive measures and of not doing enough to stop the violence.

The joint delegation of CPI(M) and CPI is the latest attempt to bring peace to the violence-torn state. It remains to be seen whether their efforts will be successful.
