Taxi Driver Escapes Narrowly After Road Caves In Near Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow
A taxi driver had a narrow escape after a road caved in near Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow on Tuesday. Visuals purportedly showing the car tilted heavily towards the large crater formed on the road have surfaced online.
"Prima facie, it looks like the road's collapse was triggered by continuous rainfall," Lucknow Municipal Corporation chief engineer Mahesh Chandra Verma said.
The incident has raised questions about the quality of infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This is not the first time that a road has caved in in the state. In January 2023, a road caved in in Varanasi, killing two people.
Critics of the Yogi government have accused it of being more interested in "showpiece" projects than in ensuring the safety of ordinary citizens. They point to the fact that the state has one of the highest road accident rates in the country.
The Yogi government has defended its record on infrastructure development, saying that it has built more roads and bridges than any other government in the state's history. However, it has also admitted that there have been some "lapses" in the quality of construction.
The road cave-in in Lucknow is a reminder of the need for the Yogi government to take urgent steps to improve the quality of infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh. The safety of ordinary citizens should not be compromised in the name of development.
In addition to the road cave-in, there have been a number of other incidents in recent months that have raised questions about the quality of infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh. These include:

- A building collapse in Kanpur that killed 10 people.
- A mall collapse in Lucknow that injured 15 people.
These incidents have led to calls for the Yogi government to be more transparent about its infrastructure projects and to ensure that they are built to high standards. The government has responded by saying that it is taking steps to improve the quality of construction and that it is committed to ensuring the safety of the people of Uttar Pradesh.
