Jhargram, October 2, 2023: A 60-year-old man was killed and two others were narrowly rescued when the wall of a mud house collapsed on them due to heavy rainfall in Jhargram district of West Bengal on Sunday.
The incident took place in Jambani village, where the victim, Shyamapad Nayek, was sleeping in his mud house when the wall collapsed on him. His wife and son were also sleeping in the room, but they managed to escape unhurt.
The other two people who were injured in the incident were identified as Shyamali Nayek (55) and Shyamal Nayek (30). They were admitted to a local hospital, where their condition is said to be stable.
The heavy rainfall has also caused widespread damage to property in the village. Several mud houses have been damaged and many trees have been uprooted. The district administration has issued a high alert in the area and asked people to remain indoors.
The heavy rainfall is being attributed to a low-pressure system that is hovering over the Bay of Bengal. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the rains will continue for another few days.
