Mob Burns Police Vehicles in Bihar After Man Dies During Anti-Liquor Raid

Muzaffarpur, Bihar: A mob allegedly set fire to two police vehicles and several bikes at a police station in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday, following the death of a man during anti-liquor raids.

The man, identified as Jitendra Yadav, jumped into a pond to escape during the raids in Rampur Jaipal village on Wednesday evening, but he drowned as he didn't know how to swim, officials said.

Protesting over Yadav's death, villagers blocked National Highway 57 with his body. They then suddenly went on a rampage and entered the campus of Garha police station, where they torched the vehicles, Superintendent of Police (City) Arvind Pratap Singh told PTI.

"There was no damage to the police station, however," he added.

Police have registered a case of rioting and arson against the unidentified villagers. No arrests have been made so far.

Bihar has imposed a total ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol since April 2016. However, bootlegging and illegal liquor trade is still rampant in the state.

This is the latest incident of violence over anti-liquor raids in Bihar. In May this year, a mob allegedly thrashed to death a police officer and his bodyguard during an anti-liquor raid in Saran district.
