At least 14 people have been killed and 22 jawans are still missing in the floods that have ravaged Sikkim following heavy rains. One jawan has been rescued so far and search operations are underway to trace the remaining 22. A total of 102 people are missing in Sikkim due to the floods.
The districts of Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong and Namchi have been severely affected by the floods. All schools in these districts have been closed till October 8 in view of the situation.
The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, has appealed to the people to stay indoors and cooperate with the authorities. He has also assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the affected people.
The Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working tirelessly to rescue and evacuate people from the flood-affected areas. Food and medical supplies are also being rushed to the affected areas.
The floods in Sikkim have caused widespread damage to infrastructure and property. The government is estimating the extent of the damage and has promised to provide compensation to the affected people.
