Kolkata, November 21 : In a significant ruling, the Calcutta High Court on Monday granted permission to a CPI(M) leader to visit Daluakhaki village in Joynagar, South 24 Parganas district, to provide relief materials to residents affected by the aftermath of a TMC leader's murder.
The court order, passed by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, allows CPI(M) leader and lawyer Sayan Banerjee to enter the village and distribute relief materials to those whose houses were ransacked and burnt following the killing of TMC leader Saifuddin Laskar on November 13.
Banerjee had filed a petition seeking access to the village, alleging that he and other CPI(M) leaders were prevented from entering by police personnel on November 14. The local TMC leadership has accused the CPI(M) of being involved in Laskar's murder, a charge the CPI(M) vehemently denies.
While granting permission to Banerjee, Justice Mantha stipulated that no political slogans or meetings would be allowed during the visit. He emphasized that the purpose of the visit should solely be to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected villagers.
The court's decision comes as a relief to the villagers, who have been struggling to cope with the loss of their homes and belongings. The distribution of relief materials is expected to bring much-needed assistance to those affected by the violence.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Laskar's murder is ongoing. Police have arrested several suspects, and the probe is likely to continue in the coming days.
