Former Bankura MP Basudeb Acharya has passed away. He died on Monday morning. He had been suffering from age-related ailments for a long time.
Comrade Basudeb Acharya, a lifelong communist, MP, and former chairman of the Railway Standing Committee, played an important role as the leader of the CPI(M) in the Lok Sabha.
He was 81 years old. Acharya was a member of the CPI(M) central committee. In 2004, after Somnath Chatterjee was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Basudeb Acharya was elected leader of the Lok Sabha party by the party.
Nine-time MP Basudeb Acharya has done a lot of work for the development of the people of Bankura. He also campaigned for the party in the 2019 elections even though he did not contest himself. He was admitted to hospital in September last year after falling ill.
Acharya repeatedly raised the problems of the most marginalized section of the working people in Parliament. He participated in the struggles outside the Parliament.
The CPI(M) state committee has expressed grief over the demise of the veteran leader.
CPI(M) state secretary Sujan Chakraborty said, “Basudeb Acharya was a revolutionary communist leader. He fought all his life for the legitimate demands of the workers-peasants-people. In his death, the people of Bankura and the leaders and workers of the CPI(M) have lost an experienced and dedicated leader.”
