New Delhi: India has issued a travel advisory to its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Myanmar, citing the evolving security situation in the country. The advisory was issued on Tuesday, November 22, 2023, and comes amid ongoing clashes between the military junta and ethnic rebel groups.
The advisory also advises Indian nationals living in Myanmar to take precautions and avoid travel to the regions affected by violence. Inter-state travel by road should also be avoided, the advisory said.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military overthrew the democratically elected government in February 2021. The junta has cracked down on dissent, with thousands of people killed and imprisoned.
The unrest in Myanmar has also had a spillover effect on neighboring India, with thousands of refugees fleeing to Mizoram and other states.
The Indian government has called for an immediate end to the violence in Myanmar and the restoration of democracy.
