Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi announced his bid for Governor of Illinois on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. He will challenge incumbent Democratic Governor JB Pritzker in the 2024 primary election.
In a video announcing his candidacy, Krishnamoorthi said that he is running for governor because "Illinois needs a new direction." He criticized Pritzker's record on education, crime, and taxes.
"Our schools are failing," Krishnamoorthi said. "Our streets are unsafe. And our taxes are too high."
Krishnamoorthi promised to improve education in Illinois, reduce crime, and cut taxes.
"I'm running for governor to make Illinois a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed," he said.
Krishnamoorthi is a Democrat who has represented Illinois' 8th congressional district since 2017. He is a former federal prosecutor and businessman.
Pritzker is a wealthy businessman who was elected governor in 2018. He is a member of the Democratic Pritzker family, which owns the Hyatt hotel chain.
The 2024 Illinois gubernatorial election is expected to be one of the most closely watched races in the country.
