Airstrikes by the Myanmar military on rebel positions near the border with India have displaced thousands of people in the Indian state of Mizoram, according to local officials and residents.
Over the past 24 hours, nearly 2,000 people have fled Myanmar and crossed into India, taking refuge in villages and towns along the border. Many of the refugees are women and children.
The airstrikes are the latest in a series of attacks by the Myanmar military on rebel groups in the country's northeast. The rebels have been fighting for autonomy from the central government for decades.
The influx of refugees has put a strain on resources in Mizoram, which is already struggling to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. The state government has appealed to the central government for help in providing relief to the refugees.
