CPI(M) Calls for Unity Among Secular Forces to Protect People's Livelihood and India's Secular Democracy

Secular Forces Must Unite to Defend People's Livelihood and India's Secular Democracy, Says CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury

NEW DELHI, India - The recent assembly elections in India have yielded mixed results for the country's major political parties. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, the Congress has managed to wrest the government from the Bharat Rashtra Samiti in Telangana.

In the wake of these election outcomes, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has emphasized the need for secular forces to unite in defense of people's livelihood and the secular democratic character of the Indian republic.

"The People have delivered their verdict," Yechury stated. "The BJP has won the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The Congress won the elections in Telangana wresting the government from the Bharat Rashtra Samiti."

Yechury acknowledged that the BJP's success in the assembly elections reflects the party's ability to consolidate its support among a significant section of the electorate. However, he cautioned against interpreting these results as a mandate for the BJP's divisive and communal agenda.

"These election results underline the need for the secular forces to redouble their efforts in defence of people’s livelihood and the secular democratic character of the Indian republic," Yechury asserted.

He argued that the BJP's economic policies have failed to deliver on their promises of growth and development, exacerbating the plight of the working class, farmers, and other marginalized groups. Moreover, the BJP's relentless pursuit of Hindutva politics has threatened India's secular fabric and created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among minority communities.

Yechury called upon all secular parties and progressive forces to join hands in countering the BJP's divisive agenda and defending the fundamental values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. He stressed the importance of building a united front to address the pressing concerns of the people and safeguard India's democratic ethos.

"The challenges before us are formidable, but the stakes are too high to remain complacent," Yechury remarked. "The time has come for secular forces to unite and rise to the occasion, safeguarding the people's livelihood and the secular democratic character of India."
