New Delhi, January 24, 2024: A planned two-day strike by steelworkers across India has been postponed after a crucial conciliation meeting at the office of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) in New Delhi today. The strike, called by various unions and federations within the steel industry, was scheduled for January 29th and 30th to protest the long-standing issue of wage settlements and other unresolved demands.
The meeting, called by the CLC, brought together representatives from all trade unions and federations alongside the management. Comrade Umesh, National Secretary of CITU and SWFI (Steel Workers' Federation of India), represented CITU in the meeting and emphasized the most pressing demands requiring immediate attention.
While all unions expressed their discontent with the management's handling of the situation, the CLC appealed for flexibility and time for bilateral negotiations to resolve the grievances. Recognizing the importance of unity among unions, the proposed strike has been deferred for the time being. However, Comrade Lalitmohan Misra of SWFI/CITU has clarified that the necessary struggle will continue.
