Bardhaman, Jan 31, 2024: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has accused the authorities of Burdwan University in West Bengal of allowing an illegal students' union affiliated to the ruling Trinamool Congress party to hold a freshers' welcome event on Tuesday.
The university has been functioning without a democratically elected students' union for the past seven years, the SFI said in a statement. The last students' union elections were held in 2017.
"In this backdrop, it is shocking that the university authorities allowed the TMCP-backed students' union to hold a freshers' welcome event yesterday," the SFI statement said. "This is nothing but an attempt by the ruling party to capture the students' space and suppress democratic voices."
The SFI has demanded that the university authorities take immediate action against those responsible for allowing the event to take place.
"We demand that the university authorities conduct fair and transparent students' union elections as soon as possible," the SFI statement said. "Until then, no such illegal activities should be allowed on the university campus."
The Burdwan University authorities have not yet commented on the SFI's allegations.
