LOS ANGELES, CA (February 21, 2024) – Acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's highly anticipated science fiction film "Mickey 17," starring Robert Pattinson, has been rescheduled for a January 31, 2025 release date. The film was originally slated to hit theaters on March 29, 2024, but Warner Bros. has announced a shift to accommodate several factors.
The new release date allows "Mickey 17" to secure an IMAX release, previously unavailable due to booking limitations. Additionally, the January 31st date aligns with the Lunar New Year holiday, a significant moviegoing period in many international markets.
The studio confirmed that the delay stems from production complications arising from last year's industry strikes, including the Hollywood writers' strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike. This necessitated additional time for post-production work to ensure a polished final product.
Based on Edward Ashton's novel "Mickey7," "Mickey 17" is a sci-fi thriller set on a future Earth grappling with resource scarcity. The story follows Mickey, a disposable employee cloned repeatedly for dangerous missions on a new, colonized planet. Pattinson portrays the titular Mickey, joined by a cast featuring Naomi Rapace, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun.
While fans of both Bong Joon-ho and Pattinson will need to exercise some additional patience, the revised release date signifies the studio's commitment to delivering a visually stunning and narratively captivating film experience.
