India - February 16, 2024: The nationwide Grameen Bharat Bandh and Industrial Strike called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) received a strong response in Maharashtra today, with lakhs of workers and peasants participating in demonstrations across the state.
Statewide Protests: In almost all districts, workers and farmers condemned the central government's policies, highlighting issues like:
- Anti-people, anti-national, and pro-corporate policies: Protesters criticized the BJP-RSS government's economic policies, claiming they favor corporations over common citizens.
- Communal and authoritarian attacks on the Constitution: Concerns were raised regarding the growing communalism and alleged erosion of constitutional values under the current regime.
- Repression of farmers: The use of tear gas and drones against protesting farmers drew strong condemnation from participants.
Mumbai Rally Draws Thousands:
- Azad Maidan Protest: Thousands of workers, including Asha workers, safai mazdoors, and others, gathered for a four-hour protest at Azad Maidan.
- Speakers: Prominent figures including AIKS president Dr. Ashok Dhawale, journalist P. Sainath, and CITU leaders addressed the crowd, criticizing government policies and highlighting workers' concerns.
Bhandup Workers Thwarted:
- CITU Workers Stopped: Hundreds of workers from Bhandup were prevented from joining the Azad Maidan protest by the authorities.
- Local Demonstration: Undeterred, they held a three-hour protest in front of the Bhandup Police Station, led by CITU leaders.
