The Digital News Publishers Association (DIGIPUB) expressed strong criticism of the suspension, arguing that a lack of transparency surrounds the government's reasoning. Citing concerns about national security and public order, the government reportedly provided vague justifications for the YouTube takedown.
"This lack of transparency makes it impossible for news platforms to defend themselves effectively," said a spokesperson for DIGIPUB. "It raises serious concerns about press freedom, especially with the general election approaching."
The targeted platform reportedly boasts millions of followers and specializes in news that often goes unreported by mainstream media. DIGIPUB argues that such suspensions stifle diverse voices and hinder public access to information.
"Silencing critical independent media creates an environment conducive to misinformation and undermines the democratic process," the spokesperson added. DIGIPUB has demanded the government lift the suspension and allow media outlets to operate freely.
The Indian government has yet to comment publicly on the specific reasons behind the platform's removal.
