In a stark warning that reverberates across the global scientific community, experts are raising alarms about the imminent threat of a potential pandemic triggered by influenza. A comprehensive international survey, set to be published next week, underscores the fears of 57% of senior disease experts who believe that a strain of flu virus could ignite the next global outbreak of life-threatening infectious illness.
Conducted by Cologne University's John Santon Garcia, the survey encompasses insights from 187 esteemed scientists and will be unveiled at the upcoming European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Congress in Barcelona. Among the respondents, 21% identified "disease X," an enigmatic virus yet to be identified by science, as the next plausible cause of a pandemic. These scientists warn that the next outbreak might emerge from unforeseen microorganisms, akin to the sudden appearance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently expressed profound concerns regarding the rampant global spread of the H5N1 influenza strain. Originating in 2020, this virulent strain has inflicted millions of cases of avian flu, decimating wild bird populations and ravaging tens of millions of poultry worldwide. Alarmingly, H5N1 has now breached the barrier to mammalian species, including domestic cattle, intensifying apprehensions about potential transmission to humans.
