Incidents of Violence in Durgapur Post-Lok Sabha Elections: 'Save Democracy' and 'All India Lawyers' Union' Leaders Meet with Victims

In the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections, several Left-wing supporters and workers in the steel city of Durgapur were victims of violence. In response, a delegation from 'Save Democracy' and 'All India Lawyers' Union', guided by senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, visited the affected individuals today to offer support and solidarity.

The delegation included prominent Kolkata High Court advocate and AILU Kolkata High Court Committee Secretary Samim Ahmed, Save Democracy Secretary Chanchal Chakraborty, and the Durgapur secretaries of both organizations, Ranjit Mukherjee. They were joined by various lawyers, human rights activists, and cultural workers from Kolkata and Durgapur.

The team first met with Firoza in the Mahua Bagan area, who had suffered significant losses when her shop was burned down. They expressed their sympathies and assured her of assistance in rebuilding her shop. They also committed to providing any necessary legal aid to support her fight for justice. The Hindustan Steel Employees Union provided her with a sewing machine and financial compensation for her damaged shop. Additionally, another sewing machine was donated by Comrade Kaushik Bose of Mogra, who joined via video call to offer his support. Several lawyers also contributed financially on a personal basis.

Next, the delegation visited Sougata Sen in the S.N. Bose area, who was attacked by alleged TMC-backed miscreants on the day of the election for serving as a polling agent.

In the Tansen area, the delegation met with Comrades Shekhar Mukherjee and Shibu Thapa, who were attacked on election day along with several elderly individuals and women for resisting electoral malpractices. The representatives assured them of ongoing legal support and solidarity in their fight against the false charges filed against them.

The delegation then proceeded to Einstein area to meet Prasun Palit, whose house was attacked, and car vandalized by alleged TMC miscreants on the night of the election results announcement due to his efforts in preventing electoral fraud. The representatives assured him and his family of continuous support and commended his resilient spirit.

Finally, the team visited the hospital road shop in Edison area to meet with Comrades Bachchu and Pintu, listening to their accounts and offering assurances of comprehensive support.

The visit underscored the commitment of 'Save Democracy' and 'All India Lawyers' Union' to stand by the victims of election-related violence and ensure justice and support for the affected individuals in Durgapur.
