June 4, 2024 — China and Hong Kong have ramped up security measures as the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown is marked. Authorities in Hong Kong conducted searches and detained several activists to prevent commemorative events. This follows a broader suppression of pro-democracy movements under the National Security Law implemented in 2020. In mainland China, authorities have also increased surveillance and security to discourage any public observance of the 1989 crackdown.
