British actor Emma Thompson led the march, condemning the government's handling of environmental issues as deeply irresponsible. The marchers also pushed for the establishment of an Environmental Rights Bill, aimed at ensuring the right to a healthy environment is enshrined in the next Parliament following the general election.
The marchers proceeded from one side of Hyde Park, passed Downing Street, and culminated at Parliament Square. Many participants donned nature-themed costumes and were accompanied by songs and chants of "Restore Nature Now."
A key message from the protesters was the prioritization of climate change and nature in the upcoming election campaigns. The opposition Labour Party, currently favored to win the next election, has pledged to end new oil and gas exploration licenses and to create a publicly owned clean energy initiative named "Green British Energy." However, Labour leader Keir Starmer has faced criticism for retracting a previous commitment to invest £28 billion annually in green infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Party has been criticized for diluting its climate commitments, including postponing a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2050, casting doubt on the UK's ability to meet its 2050 net-zero target.
This large-scale protest underscores the growing public demand for decisive action on environmental issues and reflects the mounting frustration with perceived political inertia.
