Debate Over RTI Rejection Sparks Transparency Concerns in Kuno National Park's Cheetah Project

A recent debate has ignited concerns over transparency in Madhya Pradesh's Cheetah Project at Kuno National Park. The state's forest department rejected a Right to Information (RTI) request from wildlife activist Ajay Dubey, citing Section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act. This section pertains to information that could affect national security, sovereignty, and international relations.

Dubey sought details on the health of the cheetahs, but the state's refusal raised eyebrows and suspicions about the project's transparency. Wildlife conservationists Ravi Chellam and A. Suri joined the debate to discuss the implications of the RTI rejection.

Chellam criticized the cheetah project for lacking a solid scientific foundation and transparency. He pointed out that the Supreme Court ordered the translocation of lions to Kuno in 2013, yet no lions have been moved, whereas African cheetahs were brought in swiftly. He also noted that the project is not part of the national wildlife action plan and has faced a gag order from the state forest department.

Suri, on the other hand, argued that initial issues in such projects are common and drew parallels to Project Tiger, which faced similar doubts in its early years but eventually succeeded. He emphasized the need for patience and highlighted the recent births of cheetah cubs as a positive sign.

However, Chellam disagreed with the comparison, stating that tigers were already present in India before Project Tiger, whereas cheetahs are confined to a small, fenced habitat in Kuno. He expressed concerns that the project is turning into a glorified safari park rather than a genuine conservation effort.

The debate underscores the need for transparency and clear communication from the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the Cheetah Project. As public resources and communities are being affected, the call for openness and accountability continues to grow.
