La Paz, Bolivia — Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has recently shifted his stance on the alleged coup attempt, now asserting that there was no such attempt but rather a conspiracy orchestrated by the current head of state, Luis Arce, in collaboration with the military command. According to Morales, this conspiracy aimed to prevent his nomination as a presidential candidate.
In his latest statements, Morales suggests that his initial belief in the coup attempt lasted until Wednesday and Thursday morning, after which he began to harbor doubts as the immediate threat appeared to subside.
Morales attributes his doubts to several sources:
- An unnamed minister reportedly informed subordinates that Arce would prefer to transfer power to a military junta rather than allow Morales to become a candidate.
- An anonymous soldier, who previously played futsal with Morales, warned him of an impending arrest as part of Arce’s alleged “self-coup.”
- Morales finds the recent appointment of Wilson Sanchez as army commander suspicious, arguing that Sanchez, as head of the General Staff, must have been aware of any coup plans.
- Additionally, the putschist Zúñiga reportedly claimed that the coup was Arce’s idea.
For context, Morales had previously accused Arce of plotting an assassination attempt on his life less than a year ago, though no substantial evidence was provided to support this claim.
These recent developments suggest a deepening rift within the left-wing political landscape in Bolivia. Morales’ assertions could inadvertently bolster the right-wing opposition, who may push for his imprisonment if they gain power. As the political divide widens, the likelihood of Morales winning the election appears slim, even if Arce refrains from running—a scenario deemed unlikely.
