President Mohammed Shahabuddin has appointed High Court Judge Syed Refat Ahmed as the new Chief Justice of Bangladesh after Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan tendered his resignation earlier today.


"Under the authority granted by Article 95 (1) of the Constitution, the President has appointed High Court Judge Syed Refat Ahmed as the Chief Justice this evening," confirmed President's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin in a statement to BSS.


The appointment will become official upon Syed Refat Ahmed taking his oath of office, which will be administered by the President.


Syed Refat Ahmed is set to become the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh, marking a significant transition in the nation's judiciary.


The resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan was accompanied by the resignations of five other judges from the Appellate Division, namely M. Enayetur Rahim, Md. Abu Zafar Siddiqui, Jahangir Hossain, Md. Shahinur Islam, and Kashefa Hossain.


In accordance with official procedure, the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser to the Interim Government forwarded the resignation letters to the President through the Chief Adviser.
