165 Years of ‘On the Origin of Species’ Celebrated in Durgapur

Marking the 165th anniversary of Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’, the Durgapur Ispat Vigyan Kendra organized a commemorative event on November 24, 2024. First published on this day in 1859, Darwin's work revolutionized the understanding of evolution and laid the foundation for modern biology.

The event was inaugurated by Arundhati Bhaduri, a prominent leader of the Durgapur Ispat Kendra. It was graced by the presence of Pradyut Mukhopadhyay, representing the Paschim Bardhaman District Committee of the Vigyan Kendra. The program began with a ceremonial cake-cutting to honor Darwin’s enduring legacy.

Following this, a seminar was held featuring distinguished speakers, including Dr. Tapan Kumar Paul of TDB College and Shri Ashis Mondal, a teacher from Andal School. The speakers discussed the profound significance of Darwin’s theory of natural selection and its lasting impact on life sciences.

The event also underscored the importance of science in fostering humanity, democracy, and secularism, resonating with the theme of the celebration. Attendees expressed enthusiasm for the discussions and emphasized the need to cultivate a scientific temperament in society.

The program concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the values of science and rational thought, paying tribute to Darwin’s monumental contributions to human knowledge.
