Bonai, Sundargarh (Odisha), November 28, 2024: A large-scale demonstration and indefinite dharna were launched today in front of Adani’s iron ore mine at Taldihi in the Bonai area of Sundargarh district. Local residents, activists, and tribal communities have come together to protest against what they allege are environmental and social injustices caused by the mining operations.
The protestors are demanding a halt to mining activities, citing issues such as displacement, environmental degradation, and the lack of employment opportunities for local residents despite promises made by the company. The agitation began early in the morning with people chanting slogans, holding banners, and staging sit-ins outside the main gate of the mine.
Key Concerns Raised by the Protestors:
1. Environmental Impact: Protestors allege that the mining operations have led to significant deforestation, depletion of water resources, and air pollution, severely impacting the local ecosystem.
2. Displacement: Tribal communities residing in the area claim that they are being forcibly displaced without adequate compensation or rehabilitation, violating their rights and disrupting their way of life.
3. Employment Issues: Despite promises to provide jobs to locals, many residents allege that they are being excluded, and employment opportunities are being given to outsiders instead.
Statements from the Protestors:
Speaking at the dharna site, a local community leader said, “We have lived here for generations, coexisting with nature. The mining activities are destroying our forests, water sources, and livelihoods. If our demands are not met, we will continue this protest indefinitely.”
Government and Company Response:
Neither the local administration nor Adani representatives have issued an official statement as of now. However, security around the site has been heightened to prevent any untoward incidents.
The protestors have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met. They are calling on the government to intervene and ensure sustainable and inclusive development in the region.
This demonstration adds to the growing nationwide discourse on balancing industrial development with environmental and social justice. It remains to be seen how the authorities and the company address the grievances raised by the affected communities.
