Georges Abdallah: Europe's Longest-Serving Political Prisoner Approved for Release

Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a 73-year-old Lebanese communist and pro-Palestinian activist, has been granted conditional release by a French court after 40 years in prison. Detained since 1984, Abdallah was convicted in 1987 for complicity in the murders of U.S. military attaché Charles Ray and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov, allegedly carried out by his Marxist group, the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF). His sentence sparked international controversy, with advocates labeling him a political prisoner and critics citing his links to violence.

A former teacher from Lebanon's Christian minority, Abdallah joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during Lebanon’s civil war before founding the LARF. The group claimed responsibility for several attacks against Western targets, citing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Abdallah has consistently framed his actions as resistance against imperialism rather than criminal activity.

Despite becoming eligible for release in 1999, repeated appeals have been denied, reportedly due to opposition from U.S. and Israeli authorities. The court’s recent decision, effective December 6, 2024, mandates his departure from French territory, though prosecutors have appealed, potentially delaying the process【6】【7】.

Abdallah’s case has ignited ongoing debates over justice, activism, and state violence, keeping his story in the spotlight for supporters and detractors alike.
