Uruguay’s leftist coalition, the Broad Front, has claimed victory in the presidential elections, defeating the ruling neoliberal government of President Luis Lacalle Pou. The president-elect, Yamandú Orsi, is widely regarded as a protégé of former president and iconic leftist leader Pepe Mujica.
The Broad Front is a diverse political coalition, encompassing social democrats, socialists, and the Communist Party of Uruguay. Historically, it has also included figures from the right, such as Luis Almagro, the current chief of the Organization of American States (OAS). Almagro was expelled from the Broad Front in 2019 due to his controversial support for coup attempts in Venezuela, Bolivia, and other countries.
Orsi’s election marks a shift in Uruguay’s political landscape, as the country returns to leftist governance after Lacalle Pou’s administration. The Broad Front’s victory signals renewed public support for its progressive policies and a potential pivot in Uruguay’s approach to both domestic and international issues.
This outcome also reinforces the legacy of Pepe Mujica, whose influence remains strong within the coalition and among its leadership. Orsi’s presidency is expected to build on the Broad Front’s principles of social justice, equity, and economic inclusion.
