Cold Wave Grips Delhi-NCR on New Year’s Eve, Temperatures Plunge

Cold wave in delhi

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are shivering under an intense cold wave as 2024 comes to an end. Temperatures in the region have dropped significantly, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting persistent chilly conditions in the coming days.

The mercury in parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, has dipped to record lows, creating challenges for residents. Adding to the woes, dense fog has blanketed the region, reducing visibility and disrupting travel. Morning commuters have faced difficulties on roads and delays in rail and air traffic.

The IMD has issued advisories urging people to avoid outdoor activities during the early morning and late evening hours. Residents are being cautioned to take adequate measures to stay warm and protect themselves from the harsh weather.

The cold wave has also impacted air quality. After a brief respite earlier in December, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi has returned to the "poor" category, with readings exceeding 230 in some areas. Experts have attributed this to reduced wind speeds and increased emissions due to heating sources during the winter.

With no immediate relief in sight, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. People are advised to layer up, use heating appliances safely, and avoid unnecessary travel in foggy conditions.
