Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has unequivocally dismissed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's recent assertion that the United States should acquire Greenland, emphasizing that the island is not for sale and will never be.
In a written statement to Reuters, Egede declared, "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom."
Egede leads the left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party, which advocates for Greenland's independence from Denmark.
Trump's renewed interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory rich in natural resources and strategically located in the Arctic, has been met with firm rejections from both Greenlandic and Danish officials.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed a desire to buy Greenland; a similar proposal in 2019 was also promptly declined.
