48th International Kolkata Book Fair to Begin on January 28, 2025

Kolkata, January 2025 – The much-awaited 48th International Kolkata Book Fair is set to take place from January 28 to February 9, 2025, at Boimela Prangan, Karunamoyee, Salt Lake. With Germany as the Focal Theme Country, this year’s edition promises to be a grand literary and cultural spectacle, showcasing a mix of global and Indian literary heritage.

The fair will be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee in a glittering ceremony that will see the presence of renowned poets, authors, and scholars. The Publishers & Booksellers Guild, the organizing body, has expressed its gratitude to the West Bengal Government and various departments for their continued support in making this event a success.

Global Participation:
Germany’s participation as the focal theme country is expected to add an exciting dimension to the event. Notably, the idea of the Kolkata Book Fair was inspired by Germany’s prestigious Frankfurt Book Fair, establishing a deep cultural connection between the two countries. Representatives from Germany, including Simon Kleinpass, Vice Consul of Germany in Kolkata, and Astrid Wege, Director of Goethe Institute, have expressed enthusiasm about their involvement in the fair.

In addition to Germany, the book fair will host participants from countries like the USA, France, Italy, Spain, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia, among others. Indian publishers from over 20 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, will also showcase their work.

Challenges and Growth:
Last year, the fair witnessed an impressive 27 lakh visitors and book sales of ₹23 crores, reflecting Kolkata’s love for literature. However, the increasing demand from publishers to participate poses challenges, as space at the fairground remains limited. Efforts are underway to optimize the fairground layout to ensure a visitor-friendly experience.

Key Attractions:

  • The Little Magazine Pavilion and Children’s Pavilion are set to remain crowd favorites.
  • The Kolkata Literature Festival (KLF), a key part of the event, will feature panel discussions, readings, and cultural performances by prominent literary personalities.

Invitation to Book Lovers:
Speaking to the media, Sudhangshu Sekhar Dey, General Secretary of the Publishers & Booksellers Guild, invited book lovers from all walks of life to attend the fair. "The International Kolkata Book Fair is more than just a book festival—it is a celebration of our literary heritage and cultural spirit," he said.

The 48th International Kolkata Book Fair promises to captivate millions with its blend of books, culture, and global connections.
