Midnapore: A new mother lost her life, and three others are in critical condition due to counterfeit saline administered at Midnapore Medical College Hospital. The incident has sparked outrage, with CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Salim accusing the state government of failing to curb illegal practices in the healthcare sector.
Salim criticized the state’s health administration, alleging that it has turned a blind eye to the supply of fake and banned medical products. “This is not an isolated incident; it reflects the systemic corruption under the current regime,” Salim said in a statement.
Protests and Arrests
On Saturday, CPI(M) organized a protest in Midnapore, led by students, youth, and women, against the illegal supply of counterfeit saline. However, the police arrested 15 protesters, including CPI(M)’s West Midnapore District Secretary Vijay Pal.
Condemning the arrests, Salim claimed, “The government is using police action to silence those raising their voices against corruption.” He further alleged that the network of corruption thrives under the protection of Nabanna, the state secretariat.
Call for Action
Salim warned of intensified protests, stating, “Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew are endangering lives for financial gain. If this continues, we will organize a mass movement involving patients, doctors, students, youth, workers, and farmers to march towards Swasthya Bhavan (health headquarters).”
The CPI(M) has demanded a thorough investigation into the counterfeit saline racket and strict action against those responsible.
