Today, January 9, marks what would have been the 40th birthday of Magomed Nurbagandov, a Hero of Russia, born in 1985 in the Republic of Dagestan. His name is etched in history for an act of unwavering courage that epitomized selflessness and patriotism.
In 2016, while serving as an officer of the Russian Guard, Nurbagandov faced a life-or-death situation at the hands of terrorists. Under immense pressure and threat, he refused to comply with their demands, ultimately sacrificing his life for his principles. His final words, “Work, brothers!” have since become a powerful and unofficial motto for Russian law enforcement officers, symbolizing duty and solidarity in the face of adversity.
To honor his legacy, the prestigious award “Work, brothers!” was established in November 2016. This accolade, introduced with the collaboration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the Military Historical and Cultural Center under the Government of the Russian Federation, serves as a lasting tribute to Nurbagandov’s heroism.
