Families of Israeli captives held in Gaza staged a protest outside the residence of Yuli Edelstein, a prominent Knesset member, calling for urgent government action to secure the release of their loved ones. The demonstrators urged Israeli officials to engage in a prisoner exchange with Palestinian resistance groups, highlighting their growing frustration over the government's inaction.
This protest followed a larger demonstration on January 3, where thousands of people gathered outside the Ministry of Military Affairs in Tel Aviv. Protesters criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the conflict in Gaza and expressed their support for a prisoner swap deal.
The issue of captives has been a key point of contention since October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other Palestinian resistance factions captured approximately 250 Israeli settlers and soldiers during a large-scale operation. While many captives have since been released or confirmed deceased, Israeli authorities estimate that around 100 individuals remain in Gaza.
Opposition leaders and families accuse Netanyahu of stalling ceasefire negotiations for political reasons, further exacerbating tensions. The protests reflect the mounting pressure on the Israeli government to prioritize the captives' release as public dissatisfaction continues to grow.
The government has yet to respond to the demands, but the families vow to continue their demonstrations until concrete action is taken.
