Hyangsan, DPRK • January 24, 2024
Students from across the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) arrived in the city of Hyangsan on Wednesday, January 24, after retracing the historic 250-mile route of the National Liberation Journey—a symbolic trek led by the country’s founding leader, Kim Il Sung. The expedition, which began on January 22 in Mangyongdae, Pyongyang, marks an annual effort to honor the revolutionary legacy of the Eternal Leader and instill patriotism among youth.
The three-day march follows the path taken by Kim Il Sung during the early 20th-century struggle against Japanese colonial rule. Mangyongdae, Kim’s birthplace and a pilgrimage site for North Koreans, served as the starting point. Participants traversed rugged terrain and visited key historical landmarks tied to Kim’s anti-Japanese guerrilla campaigns, culminating in Hyangsan, a region steeped in revolutionary lore.
State media emphasized the educational purpose of the journey, describing it as a “living classroom” to deepen students’ understanding of the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle. “By walking in the footsteps of the Great Leader, our youth reaffirm their commitment to upholding his ideals and defending our sovereignty,” read a statement from the organizing committee.
The event, attended by hundreds of students and educators, included ceremonies at monuments and storytelling sessions about Kim Il Sung’s leadership. Similar reenactments are held annually across the DPRK, blending physical endurance with ideological training.
The march is set to continue through additional historic sites, though further details remain undisclosed. For North Korea’s state media, such initiatives reinforce national unity and revolutionary fervor among younger generations, ensuring the perpetuation of Kim Il Sung’s legacy.
