Ōma Tuna Sold for 200 Million Yen, Second-Highest Price Ever Recorded

Tokyo, January 5 – At Tokyo’s renowned Toyosu Market, the first auction of the year, known as “hatsuseri,” witnessed a remarkable moment as a 276-kilogram bluefin tuna from Ōma, Aomori Prefecture, was sold for a staggering 207 million yen. This is the second-highest price ever recorded since the auction records began in 1999, according to Tokyo officials.

The all-time record was set in 2019 when a bluefin tuna fetched an eye-watering 333.6 million yen during the first New Year auction at Toyosu, following the market's relocation from the historic Tsukiji Market in Chuo Ward.

Recent years have seen fluctuating top bids, with 36.04 million yen recorded in 2023 and 114.24 million yen in 2024. The 2025 auction's top bid reflects the enduring prestige of Ōma’s tuna, which is celebrated for its exceptional quality and taste.

The New Year auction is a tradition that attracts global attention and sets the tone for the Japanese fishing industry, often seen as a barometer for market trends.
